Ok so my iriver clix2 broke, I got a new mp3 player, the world is better now, yay!
The newly acquired player is the iriver SPINN, so yep in the end I got stuff from the same company. This so called review has more to do with what I like and use the player the most for, so I won’t go into too much details, just a personal point of view.
Ok so I use it to store my music and videos. I don’t put a lot music files, since I like to put everything on shuffle and sometimes a 200 song list is way too long ^^U. So for 8GB, I have a sweet deal for my music, but it changes when I put videos in these baby. First of all, videos usually look beautiful in the SPINN (amoled screen!); the only con is that the image lags and gets crappy at action or fast moving sequences.
This is one of my main reasons to have chosen the SPINN against other (thank you guys -you know who you are- for suggesting the creative zen, it does look like a very solid choice): it supports txt files! In all honesty I haven’t really bothered much in finding other players that support txt, but iriver has always satisfied me in this option. What I store is basically lyrics and fanfics. Haha, yeah I know, a fujoshi 24/7… (just so you know not all of them are adult-restricted). I used the clix2 for fanfics too, but the SPINN’s bigger screen makes it more enjoyable to read. Just drop the txt files in the text folder and that’s it! man, I tried storing fanfics in the PSP and it’s just too damn work. iriver makes it too easy.
By the way since this is a touchscreen, the SPINN has a “memo” option. The best way to use this is with a little stick like the nintendo DS pen. It’s not very good but it’s good when you need to write down stuff like phone numbers.
Unfortunately not everything is sweet and peaches. This player has got a quite annoying software that would be great if they fixed it a bit:
1-Browsing is a pain. The spin thingie is good to a point, but when you want to browse quickly a long-ass list, forget it. The touchscreen is there for that, but it’s not precise, so finding a song is a combination of spinning and molesting the damn screen until you get what you want. I can only imagine the annoyance of this with people who have 2000 songs in the SPINN. Add to that the list takes so much space! GOD, lot at all that space between titles! The clix2 could fit more song titles in it’s tiny 2.4in screen! (not to mention browsing was a breeze)
2-The memory size, dammit! I love the size of this mp3 player, the screen is big enough to prevent eye strain (or at least less than with a 2.4 inch screen) so having anime in it looks amazing, but with 8GB there’s only so much you can put. It would have been nice to have an option for an micro-SD card; 8GB doesn’t cut it nowadays.
All in all I really like it, but as soon as I get my clix2 fixed, I’m using the SPINN mainly for videos and text. For people who don’t care about these two things are better off with another player. There are a lot of great options out there (in fact I think the clix2 is the best)
