Which made me think about the thousands, countless, never-ending surplus of doujinshi scanlated into (most of the time) English and how the doujin artists might feel about this, especially because I was at one point considering scanlating their work (which are absolutely THE best doujins in that certain fandom and pairing). These people are usually just fans like us (much talented though) sharing their interest and drawing, most of the time for love than for profit (not that it’s not there). As a wannabe artist I can understand why they don’t like to see their works distributed this way, but as a fan… I’m gonna be honest, I LOVE scanlations. Some of the stories the doujin artists come up with are fantastic (even I daresay, better than the canon), and I think my experience as a fujoshi would be much bleaker if I didn’t have those scanlations. So thereby lies my question: Is there a way to make a compromise? Because we have to admit, the only ways a doujin circle gets some profits is by directly buying from them in an event (the most known Comiket) or going through a courier and buying from Japanese online stores linked by the circle themselves (which might not work most of the time since they sell a limited print and once it runs out that’s pretty much it). Short of learning Japanese and getting physical copies (for which the circle as I said won’t see any money from, at least in the usual ways people get them through) it doesn’t occur to me any other way of supporting doujin circles, at least not at the moment.

Like it or not, many of the circles in Japan go big in other parts of the world because they were scanlated and propagated by the fandom. A good example of this is the BL circle “Acute Girls”, who did a ridiculous amount of Sasuke x Naruto doujins. They became known and popular within the Naruto fandom (at least the English speaking part) and when they started doing original manga, their work was picked up a.s.a.p. by an English publisher (I’ve seen the first volume several times in different stores). Whether that was because they were already known in the community or not I cannot confirm, but having your work known worldwide without any advertising company as a medium speaks volumes of how the fandom loves your work.

The problem of copyright outside of Japan shots down the idea of letting the doujin artist benefit directly from a translated version of their job, depending on the show/series and some companies are more strict (aka they will hunt your behind to the ends of hell). Making a small profit the equivalent of pocket money doesn’t stir companies, but anything significantly bigger will wake the copyright hounds and they’ll go after you. Some doujin circles just don’t want that stuff bothering them, and for good reason. In Japan their doujins are overlooked by publishing companies since they are a huge part of the fandom, but outside Japan they risk much more.

I am torn between wanting to share with the world the wonderful doujins I find and consequently the great doujin artists out there, and wanting to respect their wishes.

This post was meant to be written shortly after Fanime, but the event itself was right during the time the dorms kicked me out and had to move all my shit, so it’s a little late. From the beginning I wasn’t planning on going to Fanime even though it’s right next to campus, since I was (am) in a limited budget already due to both AnimeExpo and Yaoi-Con. Fortunately, one of my friends (a GREAT friend! ) was too tired to go on Saturday so they told me I could use their pass the hold which pretty much made me go insane with happiness. So after much hugging and countless thanking, I set myself to Fanime!

Something is different from the everyday sight.

The entrance inside is not as full but that’s because everyone is upstairs.

That’s the San Jose Convention Center which is just outside campus. While it was so comfortably close I could just walk there and look around without having a pass, it would’ve been painful to the heart. But since that was suddenly not an issue…   There were a lot of nice cosplays, and a lot more casual cosplays.

Since I’m a shopping whore, my first visit was of course the Dealer’s Hall:

The place was surprisingly big, especially for me who is enthused about any convention after going to AX for so many years, but Fanime is certainly on par with bigger cities cons. I even saw some LA based places such as Anime Jungle:

GUNDAAAAAAAAAM!!!

While my first visit was the Dealer’s Hall, as I said I didn’t (don’t) have monies to go around shopping at my heart’s content, so mostly it was eye shopping. ….Until I saw the place that always calls me with its siren song…!!! (((( ；ﾟДﾟ)))

YAOI-CON BOOTTTTTHHHHH!!!!

What got me in the first cons was always the doujinshi more than anything else, so I’m thankful their selection is the same year after year after year ^^; They aren’t the exception though since all the booths that are here that I’ve seen in AX all have the same stuff, except some of the new items that have been coming out like new figures and such. So in that sense I guess I’m thankful. Nevertheless I didn’t come unscathed from this encounter:

My favourite seme/top/attacker always gets me!

I got a poster of Asami Ryuuichi from “You’re My Love Prize in Viewfinder” or just Viewfinder series, which in my opinion is THE yaoi/BL manga out there and of course the authoress Yamane Ayano is my queen and goddess. The art is superb and the story doesn’t feel forced at all like in many generic BL manga out there. Since I didn’t want to get tempted anymore I decided to get out and visit other places. The next stop was the Game Room; basically I just went wherever a lot of people seemed to go into, so the game room it was!

HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGEEEEEEEEE–

This room was even bigger than the dealer’s! there were Japanese arcade games, a lot of TVs to play videogames and even a section full of board games you could borrow. Certainly a nice change for the tired otaku. Even so, not even half of the space was occupied by the games, and there was only one of each with few exceptions. There were a lot of lines, so it would’ve been nice to have one more of each game, especially the Japanese ones which were a lot more interesting, for me at least. (besides moar money for the con)

One of the reasons I was so happy to be able to go on Saturday was for the autograph sessions! most of the Guests of Honor would sign on that one day, at least the ones I knew so it was now or never. I took off to find the place for the autographs.

On my way out I found ciel with his aunt and trusty butler.

The autograph sessions where held in a hotel connected to the con, so after asking about it I set myself to take some more pics and see the miscellaneous events. I was also pleasantly surprised when a huge group of meidos walked in strolling on the direction I came from (no pics of that, sorry)

There was a big screen near the entrance showing videos, skits and other things, and while I was never crazy about those kind of things, I had to stop and look when I saw the reason of that meido group:

Yep, all these meido were dancing for I don’t know how long! I left for a while and when I walked past it again they were dancing another choreography, they had a lot of energy and were always smiling. Certainly fit for a cute meido!

The Scanty and Kneesocks cosplayers were really into it, saying “rules” in the way only these two characters can and basically having a lot of fun. One of the best cosplayers in the con, including Stocking and Gerterbelt here too of course!

When it came time to go and get some autographs, I was also having into mind the dreadful task that was getting them in AnimeExpo, so I was extra prepared. Turns out I didn’t need to since unlike in AX there weren’t a lot of people getting autographs, so the lines were both neat, short and didn’t need to wait for long (they used the rooms next to the autograph room to make people wait). I basically waited around an hour for the first and just jumped into the next session right afterwards, so I waited maybe half and hour to 40mins for the other ones.

I really wanted to get Tohru Furuya’s one since he’s the voice actor of Pegasus Seiya, but a lot of people knew him as Tuxedo Mask from Sailor Moon. His session was great because you could buy a plastic file of his photo and get it especially signed the next day, plus having a photo taken with him and a handshake. The best was that for people like me who wouldn’t be able to go the next day, he signed them right after the regular session! he even asked me (in English!) what was my favourite of his works, so I just answered in a stupid voice “Saint Seiya!!!” so he also wrote “Pegasus Seiya” next the to autograph . For a long time I never understood the handshake bonus that celebrities offer in Japan, but I guess since skinship is limited there, a handshake of your favourite celebrity is a big deal. I can easily understand why big fans would get worked up over it, even here.

Another great autograph I got was Mamoru Yokota’s, who said would individually draw each and every autograph!!!! That’s pretty awesome since he didn’t just sketch whatever, he went through the whole process of using pencil, then inking and lastly adding a bit of color. He’s an illustrator who worked in many anime series; I think his most recent work was in Macross Frontier, so he got a lot of requests for Sheryl and Ranka. He worked for around 4 hours straight, so he was pretty tired. We were told that he would finish the ones for people who wouldn’t be in the con the next day right then and leave the rest for Sunday. Since I needed to get it right then I asked to get it at that moment. Mine was the last one who got done even though he was super tired (they even put a pain patch on his drawing arm!) so I’m super happy (and grateful!)

The biggest treasure of this con!

I gotta say I’m gonna go to Fanime every year from now on, if only for the great experience that was getting autographs. You don’t need tickets from panels, and the lines are short enough you could get a second autograph if you wanted to. Not to mention organized! Unlike AX we would be told if GoH would be late (a couple of them were, but only for 10-15 mins) and if they were, they extended the hours so everyone could get an autograph. Halko Momoi was 15 minutes late, which she made up by staying an extra 15 mins after her session officially ended. Of course this con is smaller than AX, so I can understand why the ticket is needed and there’s more communication between organizers, but it’d be nice to have that kind of thing in AX this year unlike the mess that was last year.

All in all I stayed until 1am in the morning and had a blast. Definitely gonna make this convention another regular!

Last Feb. 19th I went to Frisco with my fujoshi BFF pal to watch GANTZ subtitled (which by the way is infinitely better than the dub, obviously) and in some miraculous coincidence there was a small anime convention going on in a hotel sharing the parking lot we parked in. At the beginning we were just hanging out until the movie started, but suddenly I see Franziska Von Karma walk past me. FRANZISKA. FUCKING. VON KARMA. So yeah I thought I must be fucking high until we started seeing all these cosplayers around us. I almost went nuts on the spot. We asked around and that’s how we found out about the convention. Unfortunately I rather watch the movie since I already go to two big anime conventions. Before going to the movie theatre though, I found Anarchy Stocking outside the mall. ANARCHY. FUCKING. STOCKING. Wearing that lovely goth loli dress she wears in her date, nonetheless! I almost came but had enough brain cells left to ask for a photo.

After having nonstop mental orgasms we went into the theatre, which hear this, were giving a poster to each attendee. Fucking awesome.

All in all the best fucking day I had in February. I need to find out about more events in Frisco; that city’s streets are a pain to navigate but the events are awesome.

Due to the limit of my skills and the unforgiving flow of time, I have depicted one waifu and one husbando, each from my raburi harems: Kyon and Mugi.

The Ferrero Rocher I had beforehand. I hope they can forgive the lack of style.

While mai Mugi-tan gave me one of her pretty regular smiles, which can light up the whole sky by the way; my husbando Kyon started undressing right in front of my very eyes, tantalizing my senses with his spectacular physique. Nosebleeds weren’t shed, but it was a close call (I should’ve drawn Itsuki with how things went, but I wasn’t expecting such a treat).

I wish I could’ve give a romantic rendition to all my harems, but as I said the constraints limit me and anyway this timid offering is for all of them equally. I’m quite happy to celebrate this day with my lovers, and I hope everybody gets to enjoy it the same way; the same satin smooth way
